Rainbow Youth Services Rowing TeamThe Rainbow Gang Prevention Program (RGPP) and The Schenectady Rowing Club, Inc. (SRCI) are joining together to provide youth services during the period 2006 - 2007. The RGPP provides all year around sports, practical, recreational and artistic activities for low-income youths between ages 7 and 17. The SRCI offers rowing to any youth in the 7th grade and higher or at least 12 years old. RGPP will help SRCI recruit youth into the sport of rowing which is traditionally, a suburban upper middle income sport. The main goal of the RGPP will be to reduce gang affiliation for at least twelve youths. The SRCI will enroll approximately 22 youths during the summer and fall of 2006-2007. Four of these high risk youth from the RGPP will enroll in the rowing program, of the 20 plus inner-city children in the rowing program, it is hoped that two will remain for the duration of their high school career. This participation will enable these youths to explore the possibility of receiving college scholarships to schools where crew is a recognized sport. All the programs will be assessed through social, physical/health and academic performances.
